Happy as a Kid in a Hardware Store

Who needs a candy store? These kids are all about hardware!

On July 25, forty kids from the True Value Club had a blast at JC Licht True Value in Chicago, learning the register, painting, building PVC pipe sculptures, going on a scavenger hunt, and watering the West Loop Community Garden. A special partnership between the True Value Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago made this Retail Work Experience Day possible...bringing big smiles, new skills, and fun all around!

This was the club’s first field trip to a True Value store, rounding out previous visits to corporate headquarters and the True Value Manufacturing paint factory. Their fun and educational day kicked off with “orientation,” where they got outfitted with their very own True Value aprons, sunglasses, and office supplies. Led by general manager Victor Lugardo, the excited 7-9 year olds then got an insider’s look at the key station and paint center, before breaking into smaller groups to visit rotating activity stations. They had a chance to decorate picture frames, search for store items, and organize end caps and aisle displays before heading outside to help a local artist create identity flags and a flower mural. Finally, they learned all about the sustainable filtration system at the community garden across the street and gave all the fresh herbs a healthy watering.

“Growing up in Chicago, I remember being in their shoes and how much it meant when someone makes you feel special,” Victor explains. “Through True Value Foundation, we had the perfect opportunity to welcome these kids to our ‘house.’ My team and I got to show them there are possibilities and steps for getting to the next level…a few kids even told me they wanted jobs here! We don’t know where we’ll fit into their puzzle as they grow up, but hopefully a learning experience like this leads to a ripple effect that will inspire them in the years to come.”

As a special memento, Victor finished the PVC pipe lamp the kids were constructing to make it functional and will present it to the True Value Club to display at their facility.

A warm thank you to Victor, the JC Licht True Value team, and all the True Value associates who helped treat the True Value Club to a day to remember!

Stewardship is central at True Value, and the True Value Foundation was established in 2008 with a focus on youth development, paint grant programs, and matching contributions in retailers’ communities. The foundation has a long-standing relationship with the Chicago Boys and Girls Club, whose Little Village location was recently renamed the True Value Club. On an annual basis, True Value oversees facility improvement projects at the club and a spring mentor program.
