A community is only as strong as its youth

Cotter Boys and Girls Club True Value Foundation is proud to continue the tradition of providing a lifeline to a better future for at-risk youth. The Cotter Boys and Girls Club is named after the Cotter family, founders of the original Cotter & Company hardware co-op now known as True Value Company. The Cotter family passion for philanthropy and helping youth was equal to their passion for the hardware business. The foundation continues the heritage of nurturing stronger futures for youth who depend on the club. Since 1996, more than $4 million has been raised for the club’s programs through True Value’s vendor community.

Originally established as the Julia C. Lathrop Club, the Cotter Boys and Girls Club draws nearly 800 members from the Lathrop homes and the surrounding North Center and Lakeview neighborhoods. In these areas, approximately 15 percent of children live in poverty, and are especially at risk for becoming victims of violence, and engaging in substance abuse, crime, and other risky behaviors.

The club provides programs that promote health, social, educational, vocational and leadership development to area youth. The club fosters a sense of belonging by providing one-on-one relationships with caring adult professionals, and well-rounded classroom experiences. Children can be free to learn new skills, cultivate their talents, enhance their education and character, and have a chance to grow up to live healthier, more productive lives.

My future and success as a straight-A student would not have been possible without the club and the foundation that supports it.
